Whether you’ve been a practicing vegan for a while now or have recently decided to follow a plant-based diet, know that just like any diet, there are healthy as well as unhealthy ways to go about nourishing yourself on a vegan meal plan. Will Bulsiewicz, M.D., a board-certified gastroenterologist with @HappyGutMD, notes that vegetarians often sabotage their weight-loss efforts by eating more processed foods when they cut out animal protein. Just a comment on the weight loss thing: While it is true that consuming less calories than you burn up should lead to weight loss, eating anything you want to lose weight might not be the healthiest way to go. Many of the diets out there are a recipe for diseases, even though a person might lose weight while doing them. I’m sure you know that but it seemed worth mentioning considering what you wrote. While our bodies have remained much the same since humans first evolved, what we eat has changed dramatically -- first by the discovery of agriculture, but especially by the Industrial Revolution. I started eating healthier about 1 1/2 yrs. ago, and lost 25 lbs within the first 6 mos., then I decided to become vegetarian, which I have been for a yr, now, but in this past yr. of being vegetarian, I have gained the entire 25 lbs. back! I’m thinking of becoming vegan in order to give up the dairy, and fish that I’ve been eating, and might try to give up pasta and breads. I don’t want to cut out everything that I love, but I can’t figure out why I can’t lose weight and keep it off; I’m really thinking it’s the dairy, pasta, bread products, and maybe wheat too? Most of the recipes on this page look delicious, and I’m definitely going to be trying them, but I was wondering if they are good for weight loss, and also if you have any suggestions in regards to weight loss, and do you think going vegan will make a real difference in weight loss? I've had plenty of clients who believed it was okay to eat unlimited amounts of plant-based treats (think coconut milk ice cream and sweet potato chips). Plant-based frozen foods, desserts, and snacks can not only be high in calories, but they're often made with refined flour and added sugar, and stripped of nutrients and fiber. While they're fine as occasional treats, when consumed daily, they can pack on pounds. One study found that processed foods may decrease post-meal calorie burning by nearly 50% compared to whole foods. Trade processed plant foods for fresh snacks. Reach for in-season fruit and dark chocolate to satisfy a sweet craving; and raw veggies with hummus or guacamole for a savory fix.

I recommend "warming up" for 10-15 minutes as you slowly bring your heart rate up. Then work to keep that heart rate up for at LEAST 30 minutes. Usually a combination of, say, jogging with short 1-minute bursts of fast running, works beautifully as you challenge your body to go farther with each workout. The tea is delicious, I use a honey and lemon in my tea sometimes if I want added flavor. Overall it's very well blended. Since drinking the tea I feel less bloated and full all the time. I'm not always hungry and looking for something to eat. It cut my cravings down tremendously. I'm down 2 inches on my waist and 5lbs after 2 weeks!! Hi Cynthia, I have good news, on average vegans have a lower BMI than meat eaters or vegetarians, so it’s definitely helpful for losing weight. That said, the only way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories than you put out. That’s it. It’s really that simple. Cutting things like bread and pasta will only help if that helps you eat fewer calories. I would suggest using a calorie counter such as My Fitness Pal. Yes, it’s a bit annoying to enter in the info, but it will give you a picture of how many calories you are actually consuming and you can see where you might have some problems. Sneaky ingredients like oil contain a whopping 120 calories per tablespoon whereas you could eat almost an entire head of cauliflower for the same amount! I also highly recommend the book Proteiaholic which really opened up my eyes about weight loss. Hope that helps!
Consuming bilberries, a northern European cousin to the blueberry, may help reduce bloat-inducing inflammation, according to a study published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research. To come to these findings, researchers divided participants into two groups; one group was given a diet that included an equivalent of 1.5 cups of blueberries, while the other group followed a control diet that didn’t include the fruit. At the end of the experiment, the bilberry-eating group had significantly less inflammation than their counterparts who didn’t munch on the berry. Since the fruit is native to Northern Europe, it isn’t widely available in the US. To reap the benefits, enjoy a few cups of bilberry tea.
Increasing your daily fiber intake can help you prevent weight gain—and possibly even encourage weight loss—according to research out of Brigham Young University in Utah. Over the course of the two-year study, the researchers found that people who increased their fiber intake generally lost weight and those who decreased the fiber in their diets gained.
