When I entered high school I started to eat for emotional reasons. I gave up. “I might as well get fat”, I thought. All other alternatives seemed impossible. I gained 88 lbs (40 kg) in a year, and then I stayed there. I skipped PE (gym class) as I was afraid that people would just stare at my body. Every day, every hour, all I thought about was my body.

Most people tend to associate a vegan diet with being lean. And science backs that notion. In a study of 40,000 adults, Oxford University researchers found that meat-eaters had the highest BMIs; vegans had the lowest; and vegetarians and semi-vegetarians landed somewhere in-between. But throughout my years in private practice, I've worked with plenty of clients who did not lose weight after cutting out animal products. And some even gained weight. Here are five common reasons this happens, plus how to avoid them—so you can reap both the health and weight-loss benefits of going vegan.
2. Switch from saturated to unsaturated fats. Our ancestors also ate wild meat, which contains just 4 percent fat compared to the 25-30 percent in our usual chops and burgers. What's more, wild game contains twice as much unsaturated fat as domesticated meats, making its fat composition more like nuts than beef. Boost your diet's ratio of saturated to unsaturated fats by getting your protein from beans, fish, shellfish, skinless poultry breast, fat-free milk products and the occasional wild game, such as venison. Eat oils, nuts, seeds and fruits (avocados, olives) that are loaded with unsaturated fats.

If you want to keep the hunger monster from rearing its food-devouring head, eat a small salad before you sit down for a meal. Researchers from Lund University in Sweden have been isolating and researching thylakoids since the early 1990’s. In 2009, Dr. Rickard Kohnke and his team at the “Appetite Regulation Unit” of the Department of Experimental Medicine, Lund University, Sweden, discovered that overweight mice on high-fat diets decreased their food intake, experienced significantly less weight gain, and had lower body fat when their high-fat diets were supplemented with thylakoid isolated from spinach.[2] Compared to the mice who did not receive thylakoid, they also had lower blood sugar levels and lower triglycerides. The participants were given inhalers that contained peppermint and were instructed to use it every two hours over a 6-month period.  The participants who consistently used the inhalers lost and average of 2% body weight each month.

Many commercial weight-loss plans assign women to a 1,200 calorie per day diet plan. The number might be higher, however, if the woman is physically active. Thought I’d brag a little about my weight loss. First I lost a lot of weight, then I got sloppy in the summer/fall, suffered a sugar relapse and gained some back, and now I’ve lost it all again. And then some. This has to be the easiest weight loss ever. No calorie-counting, no weighing of food, no hunger or self-starvation. A lot of energy, and I’m stronger than ever. Participants in the green tea extract group also had improvements in cholesterol levels and elevated levels of adiponectin compared to the placebo group.
